Kiwi Extract vs Kiwi Powder: What Formulators Are Actually Specifying

Some of what gets sold as kiwi extract is not an extract. It is green kiwifruit, freeze-dried and milled into a kiwi powder, sold under a name borrowed from the botanicals aisle. The distinction is worth getting right before you write a spec, because the format decides your dose, your label language and which clinical data you can honestly put behind the product. For bowel regularity, most of the human trial data on kiwifruit comes from whole fruit or whole-fruit kiwi fruit powder, and Actazin® has its own trials at 600 mg a day.

Kiwi Extract, Kiwi Powder, Kiwi Puree: Three Different Ingredients

What “kiwi extract” usually means on a label

The naming problem shows up in the science itself. At least two published constipation trials on freeze-dried green kiwifruit powder describe their test material as a “kiwifruit extract.” A true extract is a different thing: it is produced with water or organic solvents and mainly captures the extractable fraction of the fruit. The fibre stays behind, and so do the non-extractable polyphenols (NEPP) bound inside the plant matrix.

So when a supplier quotes “kiwi extract,” ask two questions. Was a solvent used? And how much of the whole fruit actually made it into the bag?

Whole-fruit powder: freeze-dried with Target Bio-Lock™

Actazin is New Zealand green kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) from Zespri-accredited orchards, freeze-dried using Anagenix’s Target Bio-Lock™ freeze-drying technology. The low-temperature process is designed to preserve up to 97% of the fruit’s nutritional value, and it keeps what an extract strips out: dietary fibre, extractable and non-extractable polyphenols, vitamins and actinidin, the enzyme found in kiwifruit. You can see the steps in how Actazin is made from whole green kiwifruit.

Puree for functional food and drinks

For beverages and foods, the same fruit is available as Actazin green kiwifruit puree. 5 g of puree is equivalent to the 600 mg powder dose. The puree is naturally acidic (pH around 3.1) and disperses smoothly in liquids. In Anagenix heat testing, the puree retained full actinidin activity through batch pasteurisation (65°C for 30 minutes), HTST (72°C for 15 seconds), hot fill (80°C for 10 minutes) and 95°C for 5 minutes. Around 85% of activity remained after 110–116°C, but activity collapsed at extreme heat (under 10% after 30 minutes at 180°C). The puree’s pH stayed at 3.0–3.1 throughout.

Format What is in it Where it fits Dose reference
True extract Mainly the solvent-extractable fraction; little fibre or bound polyphenol Depends on the extract No Actazin trial data
Freeze-dried whole-fruit powder (Actazin) Fibre, extractable and non-extractable polyphenols, vitamins, actinidin Capsules, chewables, sachets, functional foods 600 mg/day
Whole-fruit puree (Actazin puree) The same whole green kiwifruit, minimally processed Gut health shots, smoothies, RTD drinks, non-dairy yoghurt drinks, sauces, gummies 5 g = 600 mg powder

Why The Whole-Fruit Format Matters For The Claim

Anagenix builds Actazin around the whole fruit rather than a single molecule. As a whole-fruit ingredient, Actazin has gel-forming properties that deliver its benefit to the colon. Soluble fibre can also help buffer polyphenols from stomach acid and enzymes, so more of them travel further down the gut. Actinidin supports general digestion along the way.

Strip the fibre out and you have changed the ingredient. That matters when your marketing leans on kiwifruit research: the clinical evidence below was generated with whole-fruit material, and the closer your ingredient is to that material, the easier the claim is to defend.

There is a label upside too. Actazin is made from whole green kiwifruit: Non-GMO, GRAS, with no added sugars or flavours.

Clinical Evidence Behind Green Kiwi Powder

Actazin has two randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials.

Trial Dose and duration Participants Results
Graham et al., 2024 (multi-centre, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel RCT) 600 mg/day for 28 days 85 healthy adults with occasional constipation Significantly improved stool form (Bristol Stool Form Scale) vs placebo at day 14 (p<0.05). Complete spontaneous bowel movements up by 1.44 per week at endpoint (p<0.001 vs baseline). Better abdominal, rectal, stool symptom and quality of life scores (p<0.05 vs baseline).
Ansell et al., 2015 (double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover RCT) 600 mg or 2,400 mg/day, 4 weeks each 19 healthy adults without constipation (a separate group of 9 functionally constipated adults was too small to show significant changes) 2,400 mg: +0.77 bowel movements per week (p=0.014 vs washout). 600 mg: +0.56 per week, just short of significance (p=0.06). Stools did not become looser in people whose bowel habits were already normal.

Dose is where this gets practical. Other freeze-dried green kiwifruit powders have been studied at 2,160 mg to 5,500 mg a day, a water extract at 1,000 mg, and whole-fruit trials typically use two fresh green kiwifruit daily. Actazin’s lead trial dose is 600 mg, which fits capsules and chewables, formats where a multi-gram dose is hard to deliver.

Green vs Gold Kiwi Powder: Match The Ingredient To The Job

Green and gold kiwifruit powders are not interchangeable. They come from different fruit and carry different evidence.

Green kiwifruit powder (Actazin) Gold kiwifruit powder (Livaux)
Fruit NZ green kiwifruit NZ gold kiwifruit
Main job Bowel regularity, stool form, digestive comfort Prebiotic: feeding beneficial gut bacteria
Lead human result 600 mg/day for 28 days: significantly improved stool form vs placebo, and +1.44 complete spontaneous bowel movements per week vs baseline (p<0.001; RCT, n=85) 600 mg/day for 28 days: a statistically significant increase in the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (p=0.047; RCT, n=85)

The two results come from separate trials with different endpoints, so read them as evidence for different jobs, not as a head-to-head comparison.

If the brief is regularity, specify green. If the brief is the microbiome, look at the gold kiwifruit prebiotic Livaux, and consider pairing the two for a full-spectrum gut formula. For protein digestion, where the enzyme is the point, concentrated actinidin for protein digestion is the more direct choice.

Formulation Notes

  • Dose: 600 mg/day powder, or 5 g puree.
  • Formats: capsules, chewables, sachets and functional foods for the powder. Shots, smoothies, RTD drinks, non-dairy yoghurt drinks, sauces and gummies for the puree.
  • Label credentials: FODMAP friendly, Non-GMO, gluten-free, Kosher and Halal.
  • Who it suits: Anagenix lists Actazin as suitable for all age groups.
  • Sourcing: New Zealand green kiwifruit from Zespri-accredited orchards, including cosmetically imperfect fruit. Anagenix holds an EcoVadis Platinum rating.

For finished-product starting points, see the bowel regularity formulation ideas. Anagenix also offers formulation, marketing and Market Acceptance Testing support.

The practical rule: ask for the trial material, not the name on the spec sheet. If a “kiwi extract” cannot tell you what part of the fruit is in it, it cannot borrow the evidence either. To get samples and pricing, source Actazin through a regional distributor. Real ingredients, No BS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is kiwi extract the same as kiwi powder?

Not always. Some ingredients sold as kiwi extract are freeze-dried whole kiwifruit powder. A true extract is made with water or organic solvents and keeps mainly the extractable fraction, leaving behind most of the fibre and fibre-bound polyphenols. Check the spec sheet for the process and the part of the fruit used.

How much kiwi powder should go in a daily serving?

Actazin’s 2024 trial used 600 mg a day for 28 days and found significantly improved stool form compared with placebo, with complete spontaneous bowel movements up by 1.44 per week from baseline. An earlier trial in healthy adults also tested 2,400 mg a day.

Can kiwi fruit powder be used in beverages?

Yes, but for drinks the puree is usually the better format. 5 g of Actazin puree equals the 600 mg powder dose, it disperses smoothly in liquids, is naturally acidic, with a pH of around 3, and is stable through pasteurisation and hot fill.

Should I use green or gold kiwi powder for a gut health product?

It depends on the claim. Green kiwifruit powder (Actazin) has human data on bowel regularity, stool form and digestive comfort. Gold kiwifruit powder (Livaux) has human data as a prebiotic. The two can be combined.
